Description

Puri Agung Nyalian is the historic royal residence of Nyalian's princely house, remembered locally as a center of what is described as the West Klungkung Kingdom. It remains an inhabited royal family residence and an active ceremonial site — not a museum — which is central to how it should be presented to visitors. The puri's descendants and historic structures survive today, carrying architecture and ornamentation described as rich in symbolic, social, and spiritual meaning. In 2019, Puri Agung Nyalian was formally introduced as a village tourism destination at a Prani Royal Diner event held at the Pemedal Mrajan Agung (the puri's grand gateway), attended by the Regent of Klungkung. Puri Agung Nyalian is the birthplace of Arja Gede Garong, a form of Balinese Arja theatre, first staged around the 1950s. It is also the ceremonial home of Tari Baris Tentara, a sacred dance performed exclusively by chosen palace dancers during the Napak Pertiwi procession at the Pamerajan Agung (the puri's principal family temple).
