Description

The ceremonial home of one of Nyalian's most distinctive living traditions: the Sang Hyang Jaran Mesiram ritual, a sacred trance performance held during Piodalan (temple anniversary ceremony) at the village's Kahyangan temple. Sang Hyang Jaran Mesiram is documented as a defining cultural tradition unique to Nyalian among Bali's villages, tied to the village's temple ceremonial calendar rather than a fixed annual date. During the ritual, a chosen medium (Pemundut) enters a trance state, understood locally as possession by Ratu Sanghyang Jaran, symbolized by a sacred horse-headed object. Accompanied by a specific ceremonial chant, the possessed Pemundut dances within a bed of burning coconut husk embers while holding the sacred symbolic object. This is a Sanghyang-class ritual — a category of Balinese sacred performance rooted in trance and temple protection — and is treated by the community as a religious rite, not a cultural show. Because Sang Hyang Jaran Mesiram occurs only during Piodalan on the temple's own ceremonial schedule (not a fixed, publicly bookable date), visitors may witness it respectfully if timing allows, never as a scheduled attraction.
