Description

Capil is a traditional wide-brimmed hat woven from young coconut leaf (janur), historically worn as everyday protective headwear for farming and outdoor work across Bali. In Nyalian, capil-weaving is concentrated in Dusun Pemenang, where it has been practiced as a hereditary craft passed down through generations of local families. The craft uses young coconut leaf (janur), locally referred to as demela when still young and unopened, with one ikat (bundle of 50 janur stems) woven into one finished capil. Visitors can observe artisans at work, learn about the traditional weaving technique, and understand both the cultural significance and the real economic challenges facing this hereditary livelihood. The craft has received government recognition, including training programs in 2019 focused on marketing, financial management, and tourism readiness, and a ministerial visit in 2023. Workshop experiences allow visitors to try their hand at basic weaving techniques under expert guidance.
